Building Conceptual Understanding to Increase Procedural Fluency

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule and see who's attending!

Procedural fluency is a critical component of mathematical proficiency; but it is much more than memorizing facts or processes. Fluency builds on a foundation of conceptual understanding, strategic reasoning, and problem solving. By attending this session, teachers will learn strategies to help increase conceptual understanding of mathematical concepts. We will highlight ideas that enable students to choose flexibly among methods and strategies and thus become more fluent with procedures. This session includes findings from an exploratory research study conducted by members of the Teaching Redesign Corps.
